New Year’s Eve in Pattaya is one of the biggest nights in Thailand. The fireworks over Beach Road are spectacular. The crowds are enormous. If you do not plan it, you may spend the countdown sitting in a car on Sukhumvit Road.

Book Your Room Early — Prices Triple

A room that costs 2,000 baht a night in November will cost 8,000 to 10,000 baht on New Year’s Eve. This is not an exaggeration. It applies to guesthouses, hotels, and serviced apartments across the city. The same room, the same bed, four or five times the price because of one night.

Rooms sell out weeks in advance. If you are reading this in October or November and thinking about coming to Pattaya for New Year’s, book now. Not next week. Now.

The Traffic Is Serious

Beach Road and the roads into central Pattaya get completely gridlocked from late afternoon on New Year’s Eve. In bad years — and this has happened — cars are stopped from 8pm onwards. People sit in traffic for three or four hours. The clock hits midnight and they are still on the road, doors open, watching the fireworks from inside their cars because there is nowhere to go.

It does not happen every year at that level. But it can happen.

If you want to be near the fireworks at midnight, you have two options. Arrive before 6pm and find your spot early, or stay somewhere within walking distance so you never need to get in a car.

Where to Watch the Fireworks

The main fireworks display is over the bay, visible from Beach Road and the pier area. Pattaya Countdown draws crowds of tens of thousands to the Walking Street and central Beach Road area.

Pratumnak Hill is quieter. From the elevated parts of the hill you can see the bay and catch the fireworks without being in the main crowd. It is a different experience — more relaxed, less chaotic.

Jomtien Beach also has its own countdown events and is less congested than central Pattaya.
