Dongtan Beach Pattaya - What to Know Before You Go

Dongtan Beach Pattaya - What to Know Before You Go

Dongtan Beach Pattaya is the small, quiet beach tucked at the base of Pratumnak Hill - a different experience from Pattaya Beach to the north and Jomtien to the south. No jet skis, no beach vendors every ten metres, no inflatable bananas. It is a local beach used by the Pratumnak expat community and visitors staying on the hill who want water without the circus.

Dongtan Beach Pattaya - quiet sandy beach on Pratumnak Hill

What Dongtan Beach Is Like

The beach is short - a few hundred metres of sand between Pratumnak Hill and the southern end of Pattaya Bay. The water here is calmer than Pattaya Beach proper. No waves to speak of. The sea is shallow enough to walk out a long way before it gets deep.

The sand is kept reasonably clean. There are sun loungers and umbrellas available for hire from the small beach businesses along the front. A handful of food and drink stalls operate during the day. Nothing elaborate - cold drinks, some fruit, basic beach food.

It gets busy on weekends, particularly in high season (November to February). On weekday mornings it is often nearly empty. The expats who live on Pratumnak and use Dongtan regularly tend to come early - before 10am - when the beach is at its quietest.

Getting to Dongtan Beach from Pratumnak Road

Dongtan Beach is walkable from Pratumnak Road. From The Lunch Box Cafe at 338/6 Pratumnak Road, the walk takes around 10 to 15 minutes on foot depending on your pace. Head down the hill toward the sea - the road curves down and the beach is at the bottom.

By motorbike it is 2 minutes. By Grab, it barely registers as a journey.

There is limited parking near the beach itself. Motorbikes can park on the nearby sois. For anyone staying on Pratumnak Hill, walking is the practical option.

Dongtan vs Jomtien vs Pattaya Beach

Each of Pattaya’s three main beach areas has a different character.

Pattaya Beach - the main strip. Busy all day, every day. Jet skis, parasailing, persistent vendors. The sea here is not clean by any standard. Good for people-watching, not for swimming.

Jomtien Beach - longer and wider than Pattaya Beach. More space, less chaos. Popular with expat families and kitesurfers at the far end. The sea is cleaner than Pattaya Beach. A 10-minute drive from Pratumnak.

Dongtan Beach - the shortest of the three. Quietest of the three. The expat choice for an easy beach morning without going far. Not a destination beach for a full day - it is a 90-minute beach for people who live nearby.

For anyone staying on Pratumnak Hill, Dongtan is the practical beach. Jomtien is worth the trip for a longer beach day or when you want more space.

Before or After the Beach

The Lunch Box Cafe at 338/6 Pratumnak Road is the natural stop before heading to Dongtan or after coming back. Open daily from 8am to 5pm.
