Big Buddha Pattaya - Wat Phra Yai on Pratumnak Hill

Big Buddha Pattaya - officially Wat Phra Yai - sits at the top of Pratumnak Hill, 150 metres from The Lunch Box Cafe at 338/6 Pratumnak Road. It is one of the most visited landmarks in Pattaya and one of the easiest to reach on foot if you are staying on the hill.

Big Buddha Pattaya - Wat Phra Yai on Pratumnak Hill

What Is the Big Buddha in Pattaya

Wat Phra Yai is a Buddhist temple built around a large gold-coloured Buddha image. The main statue is around 18 metres tall and is visible from a wide area of southern Pattaya and the bay. The temple grounds include several smaller shrines, pavilions, and Buddha images arranged around the main hall.

It is an active temple - monks are present, merit-making activities happen here, and it functions as a working religious site, not just a tourist attraction. Visitors are welcome but basic dress codes apply: shoulders and knees covered. Sarongs are available at the entrance for those who need them.

Entry is free. The site is open daily.

Getting There

From The Lunch Box Cafe at 338/6 Pratumnak Road, Big Buddha is a 2-minute walk up the hill - roughly 150 metres. The temple entrance is visible from the road. It is the most straightforward landmark walk on Pratumnak Hill.

From central Pattaya or Jomtien, Grab is the easiest option. By motorbike, Pratumnak Road takes you directly to the top of the hill. There is a small parking area near the temple entrance.

Songthaews (baht buses) run along Pratumnak Road. The temple is at the top of the hill on the main road - easy to spot.

What to Expect at the Temple

The main Buddha image is the focal point. The views from the temple grounds are among the best on the hill - you can see Pattaya Bay, the city skyline, and on a clear day Koh Larn Island in the Gulf of Thailand.

There are vendors selling flowers, incense, and offerings near the entrance for those who want to make merit. Small food stalls operate nearby. The temple area is not large and most visitors spend 20 to 40 minutes here.

Early morning - before 9am - is the quietest time. Midday can be busy with tour groups. Late afternoon catches the light well for photos looking out over the bay.

Dress modestly. Remove shoes before entering any building. The temple grounds themselves do not require shoes to be removed.

The Area Around Wat Phra Yai

The Big Buddha sits at the top of Pratumnak Hill. The road down from the temple - Pratumnak Road - runs through one of the quieter and more residential parts of Pattaya. The expat community on the hill is large and established. Prices at the shops and restaurants on Pratumnak Road reflect a local crowd rather than a tourist one.

Tesco Lotus is about 150 metres below the temple on Pratumnak Road. A 7-Eleven is directly opposite. Dongtan Beach is walkable down the hill toward the sea.

The hill itself is covered in the Pratumnak or Pratamnak guide - including why the same road appears with two different spellings on official signs.

Before or After the Temple

The Lunch Box Cafe is at 338/6 Pratumnak Road - 150 metres down the hill from the temple entrance. Open daily from 8am to 5pm.

It is the obvious stop before or after visiting Wat Phra Yai. A breakfast on Pratumnak Hill before a morning walk up to the temple, or a coffee and juice on the way back down.
